How to Make Christmas More Meaniful

Parenting Solutions by Dr. Paula (“The Joy Lady”)

Mom walked in the room and overheard her children talking about Christmas. What she heard made her very disappointed. The children could only think about the gifts that they were going to GET for Christmas. Not a word was said about what they would GIVE.

How can we help our children learn to be unselfish; to be "others-centered", especially at Christmas?

Here are six ways parents can help their children be “others-centered” instead of “self-centered” at Christmas and throughout the year:

1. Show, through your example, compassion and empathy. Speak kindly to those less fortunate, and serve others gladly. Your children are watching and learning.

2. Have regular family meetings where your family discusses people whom they’ve noticed are in need of help. Then talk about ways of helping these people. (One of the benefits of identifying the needs of others is that it helps our children look for people whom they can help, and they become aware of those in need.)

3. Instead of spending money only on holiday gifts for family members, identify a family in need. Then work together and give a needy family a Merry Christmas. Be sure to do it anonymously.

4. Create a loving, helpful atmosphere in your own home. Teach your children to serve one another.

5. Teach your children about the many families worldwide who lack even the barest of necessities. Show your children pictures and discuss how you can help. At the very least parents can help children cultivate an attitude of gratitude.

6. As a family volunteer at your local food bank, homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Nursing homes are also ideal places to serve your fellowman.

Let’s help our children remember the reason for the season, and keep Christ in Christmas through service.
